Laughter As Medicine For Breast Cancer Recovery

By Diana Ross, E-RYT 500

I want to share my feelings on laughter and joy  as part of the healing cycle of cancer recovery, and for that matter, many conditions. Undoubtedly, laughter has  a real beneficial effect on our physical and emotional health. A robust, gut explosive laugh simply feels good. It literally melts stress away.

So why aren’t we laughing more to relieve our stress and improve our health?
It may be a challenge to get out of our own way. So often we take life and our circumstances too seriously, and it doesn’t serve us to do so. Truth be told, some days you might have to fake it when you just don’t feel like laughing, and here’s a good reason to go through the motions: studies show that even when manipulated to smile people actually feel happier. Laughter stops depression in its tracks.

I know for myself when I stop and watch a good sitcom or read a funny email from a friend, I focus only  on this lighter side, and it lifts me. Even studies show the more you laugh the more positive you become; you just feel better about practically everything. Medical research on laughter Studies at the University  of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore (2005)   are among many that show groundbreaking results in terms of laughter’s role in  the health of the mind and body.  There is a strong connection between blood  vessel expansion (vasodilation) through laughter, at least during those seconds and moments when we are laughing and for a little while beyond. Improvements in blood flow have actually  found to be equal to those from a 15-30 minute  workout. Researchers believe laughing causes the body  to release endorphins, or “natural pain killers.” These endorphins contribute to a sense of well being; they counteract the effects of stress hormones, and cause dilation of the blood vessels. Even anticipating laughter can increase endorphin levels.

Laughter and our immune system
Studies show that when we laugh, lymph fluid moves more efficiently through our bodies; an immune system booster and way to eliminate what we do not need. That’s because with better lymph flow we clear out old, dead waste and toxins from our organs and muscle tissue. It’s important to understand that our lymph system doesn’t have it’s own pump; we need to move around (and breath deeply) to properly circulate lymph. Laughter supports this function.

Laughter’s greatest power
We know that now is the time to pull out all the stops and help ourselves get better. Laughter’s ability to help in this arena is perhaps its greatest power. It puts us in a positive state of mind, and that’s just what we need to bring us through the physical and emotional roller coaster ride of cancer. We need to reduce our levels of chronic stress (our journey with cancer may  have just begun).

We need to boost our immune system function; protect our nervous system; and
my God, our sanity. Well, “Laughter is the Best Medicine.”

I cannot say  enough about laughing, right down to the fact that the people around us will enjoy  our company, which will support our well being.  Go check out funny videos; YouTube is full of funny. Rent funny  movies. I guarantee you a good laugh or two.

Holistic Healing & Herbal Teas For Breast Cancer

The earth is a living entity with the equivalent of senses, intelligence, memory, and the capacity to act. Healing is a Gaian quality as it is a very personal expression of balance and wholeness.

A herb is a plant in relationship with humanity and herbalism becomes the exploration of humanities relationship with the plant kingdom.

From a holistic stand point, a person isn’t a patient with a disease syndrome but a whole being.
  1. This wholeness necessitates the appreciation of the mental, emotional, spiritual, social and environmental aspects of their life as well as the physical.
  2. An herbalist has deep respect and an understanding that healing oneself is inherent in all of us.
  3. We have a dual relationship in our self healing process and in our relationship with the earth’s powerful herbal bounties.
http://www.breastcanceryoga.com/~shop/calm-tea/125759/

A holistic approach is important and unique in that illness is an opportunity for self discovery. Herbal medicine is uniquely suited for the treatment of illness of the digestive system. Throughout out time food and the use of plants has been our medicine, ensuring that the special healing properties of the herbs had a direct effect due to metabolism and absorption of the entire range of plant chemicals, but also an action directly on contact to issue. Digestion and subsequent elimination are pivotal as is the nervous system.

Amma Therapy For Breast Cancer

So What is Amma Therapy?

Amma Therapy is an ancient healing system which dates back some 5000 years ago during the Yellow Emperor era. It is a highly skilled system of body work therapy which employs massage techniques, manipulations, and the application of pressure, friction and touch-to-points on the energy channels on which they are found. The channels are the pathways through which energy passes throughout our bodies. Amma, is less defined by a specific technique than by its purpose, philosophy, and sophisticated practice as a healing art.

Amma Therapy is fundamentally an energetic therapy focused on the balance and movement of “life energy” in the human body. Starting with the basic application of hand techniques used to balance the flow of energy. Then other methods were developed, including the use of needles (acupuncture), heat (moxibustion), skeletal manipulation, the appropriate use of herbal medications, diet, and then meditation. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) all these methods target the flow and balance of energy in the channels. The modern Amma therapist is knowledgeable in all of these areas but relies primarily on the sensitivity and strength of the hands to manipulate life energy.

Am-ma means “push-pull” in Chinese. Amma Therapy utilizes all the techniques of the major forms of therapeutic massage:

Deep pressure and point manipulation used in Shiatsu massage are applied to attain the desired effects of energetic movement and release of muscular contraction.

Foot reflex points commonly referred to as “foot reflexology” are stimulated during to these points which often has a profound outcome on the deeper organs and tissues within the body.

Deep Facial manipulation techniques and connective tissue manipulation used in Rolfing are used for muscle stretching and pushing techniques that are common to European or Swedish massage.

In addition, the master therapist is well versed in, and fully capable of, the skeletal manipulations that are the basis of chiropractic. Elizabeth also uses essential oils and healing crystals. She feels the energy blockages and moves energy through. I can feel the warmth rising and my breath being

FIR Infrared - A Soothing and Healing Cancer Treatment

By Diana Ross Co-Founder of Breast Cancer Yoga.
FIR Infrared Therapy is a pretty incredible alternative cancer treatment. I was fortunate enough to buy this FIR Infrared “Rainbow” some time back for aches and pains for me and my family.  Now I use it all the time to generate heat “fever heat.” When cancer cells are heated past 41/43c degrees the blood flow is insufficient for the proper elimination of wastes (namely lactic acid) or proper oxygenation, due to the inability of the capillaries to dilate effectively at this higher temperature. Consequently the cancer cells become oxygen-deprived and lactic acid build ups, the pH of the cell will steadily drop, and the cell will die of its own acidity. Healthy cells have no problem regulating themselves at the same temperature (+ 41 degrees C) so I realized that this is a potential cancer treatment without damaging side effects to healthy cells!

What is Far Infrared therapy (FIR) and what does it do?

FIR Infrared Rays are waves of energy, totally invisible to the naked eye and capable of penetrating deep into the human body. The rays gently elevate the body's surface temperature (107.6F/42 celsius and above; this enables the destruction of cancer cells), and activate major bodily functions.

Another thing that I am doing is applying castor oil treatments (pack) over my chest and organs. I saturate the oil on a piece of flannel fabric. Placing a towel underneath my back (just in case) keeps the area clean from any leaks.

Castor oil works as an antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal agent. When applied topically it treats a variety of skin conditions, reduces pain, and stimulates immune system function. It also acts as a lymphatic stimulant so for me to have lymphatic node tumors - it works. Castor oil has been thoroughly investigated for its industrial use but only a minimal amount of research has been focused on its medicinal benefits. That said, the healing properties of castor oil appears to have survived countless generations of scrutiny. One of the more compelling health benefits is castor oil's support of your immune system. This healing property does not require you ingest ing the oil but only to apply it externally. The benefits of castor oil packs were popularized by the late psychic healer Edgar Cayce.

My friend Lorraine Aguilar from www.yogaflowstudio.com is my model. We spent the day going through all my protocols. It was a lot of fun checking everything out. Lorraine brought a “Heart and Lung” Yoga Video for us to explore so there was a lot of sharing and caring.

Last note I am also doing FIR Infrared Sauna treatments which is far more intense for the whole body but very therapeutic. I will save that for another day. Lots more to share. love and light everyone. Please post comments. I enjoy dialoging.

Breast Cancer Alkaline Water Systems From Breast Cancer Yoga

Alkaline Water For Breast Cancer

Alkaline Water System For Breast Cancer Yoga

Breast Cancer Yoga offers “comfort and hope” for breast cancer through knowledge and wellness products. We offer an alkaline water system and with this article based on information from Cancer Fighting Strategies, you can understand how our product works. With a holistic complementary approach to breast cancer you can begin to heal, on all levels.

Restores the pH balance in the body.
  • Alkaline water (also referred to as ionized water) can neutralize the acidity of the body caused by stress, modern diet, air pollution, and many bottled waters.
  • A higher pH in the body reduces the need for fat and cholesterol to protect the body from damaging acids.
  • Negatively charged hydroxyl ions, (OH -) found in abundance in alkaline water, act as natural antioxidants and donate electrons, neutralizing harmful free radicals.
  • Alkaline water tastes lighter with a pleasantly sweet flavor.
  • Improves the body's absorption of essential nutrients
  • Improves body function by cleaning your cells from the inside out.
  • Using water with a higher pH level improves the taste of beverages and food.
  • Cooking with alkaline water improves the taste and quality of foods and using acidic
  • water when boiling eggs improves their quality.
Provides superior hydration and nutrition at the cellular level.
  • Ionization breaks clusters of water molecules into smaller micro-clusters, reducing the size of the clusters from the 11-16 molecules in standard water to just 5-6 molecules in ionized water. Smaller clusters pass through cell walls more easily and hydrate the cells more quickly.
  • Faster hydration allows the body to regulate its temperature more efficiently.
  • Micro-clusters of mineral-bearing ionized water also deliver nutrients more efficiently to the cells
Detoxifies cells more efficiently than standard drinking water.
  • Due to their smaller size, micro-clusters of ionized water molecules are expelled from the cells more efficiently, carrying damaging toxins out of the cells and flushing them out of the system.
  • The negative charge of ionized alkaline water will attract the positive ions of acids and neutralize them within the body.

How Can Women Use Yoga to Prevent Breast Cancer?

and find out about:  WATCH NOW
How does yoga help breast cancer recovery in particular? Yoga does three things, it creates lymph to move throughout the channels, encourages deep breathing, and fosters relaxation. All this helps to decrease cortisol and increases GABA levels so that a feeling of harmony can occur.
How can women use yoga to prevent breast cancer? There are many things women can do to help prevent breast cancer. First is to move your arms to help stimulate lymph flow, become a conscious breather. The breath is instrumental in also moving lymph. Eating right, getting lots of good sleep, drinking good quality water, and surrounding yourself with those that love you all play a part in good heal and cancer prevention.
In your experience how does the holistic approach to treating breast cancer differ from the generic western approach? There are three approaches, alternative, complementary and allopathic. Currently allopathic medicine has been introducing more and more complementary therapies in their bag of wellness tricks, and yoga is one of them. You will see more and more merging together when someone is diagnosis with breast cancer. Studies are supporting the benefits of yoga and recovery.
What is Asana and what is its connection to Breast cancer?
A yoga pose is called an asana.

These questions will be answered by Diana Ross- Experienced-Registered Yoga Teacher, breast cancer survivor and the founder of Breast Cancer Yoga.

How To Use A Dry Skin Brush For Breast Cancer & Lymphedema

Dry Brush
Dry brushing stimulates the skin and circulates lymph fluid which is vital for overall health. The skin is the largest organ in the body and is responsible for a quarter of the body’s detoxification. The ability of the skin to excrete toxins is of paramount importance. Dry skin brushing helps to shed dead skin cells, which improves skin texture and cell renewal.

How To Use A Dry Brush For Breast Cancer & Lymphedema
  1. Dry Brush your entire body before you shower, preferably in the morning or before bed. This helps loosen and remove dead skin and uric acid crystals.
  2. Start at the soles of your feet doing circular movements, then brush upwards on your legs toward your heart. Use long, even strokes.
  3. Brush all the way up your legs, scooping forward from behind your hips to your tummy. If you have cellulite on your hips and thighs, concentrate their a little longer.
  4. Then begin circular movements over your tummy. Start with up on right and down on left, simulating the natural movement of the bowels.
  5. Be kind in the thin sensitive skin areas of inner arm, arm pits or tops of hands and not directly on breasts. Avoid brushing anywhere the skin is broken or where you have a rash, infection, cut or wound.
  6. When ready, start the shower with warm water and end briefly with cold. Let the cold water start at your legs then the heart is last. This hot/cold therapy further stimulates the lymphatic system which improves overall circulation.
  7. Dry off vigorously and massage pure plant oils into your skin or spray on Simply Lavender. You may want your skin to breathe for a while too. Enjoy this process of good health and detoxification.
Dry Brushing - Skin Exfoliant
Dry skin brushing increases circulation to skin, encouraging your body’s discharge of metabolic wastes, which greatly aids the lymphatic drainage of the entire body. When the body rids itself of toxins, it is able to run more efficiently in all areas. Dry skin brushing stimulates the lymph canals to drain toxic mucoid matter into the colon, thereby purifying the entire system. This enables the lymph to perform its house-cleaning duties by keeping the blood and other vital tissues detoxified.

Breast Cancer Recovery Walking Meditaion

Well there are many of us who just don’t or can’t sit still.  The mind takes over and we struggle with quieting ourselves.  We can’t sit, we need to move around so why not a walking meditation.  The picture I shared of a path in the woods is from my morning meditative walk with my dog, “Happy Riley”.   We both so look forward to this time.  He smiles the entire walk.

To begin YOUR walk you need to be conscious of your footsteps, and your pacing.  You want to breath in feeling the your expand inside you and walk with slow and deliberate steps.  Feel the earth under you feet.  Notice if you feel light or heavy.  Is your chest lifted or is it drooping forward?  Be as comfortable as possible. Now notice everything.  Let you vision expand to every space.  Smell the air.  Is it crisp?  Is there a breeze? Notice everything.  Just be mindful of your surroundings.  Now notice your breath.  Without taking control of your breath, allow it feel natural and satisfying.  Let your arms and hands dangle to your side body or maybe in your pockets.  I personally love pockets.  Feel your inhaling breath come and expand your chest; now let your exhaling breath release thoughts that may take you away from this walking meditation.  Walk if you can for 15/30 minutes.  Then when you reach home see if you can sit comfortably and quietly for 5 minutes.  Set an intention for your day. This could be the start of a great restorative walking meditation.

Alkaline Water For Yoga During Breast Cancer Recovery

Alkaline Water For Breast Cancer

Alkaline Water and Breast Cancer Yoga will support a “Healthy & Hopeful Lifestyle” for breast cancer prevention and recovery. With this in mind, we have chosen an alkaline water system that produces the highest quality alkaline water available. Alkaline water compliments and should be used in conjunction with our yoga product lines (i.e. books, CD’s & DVD’s)
Alkaline Water Complements a Yoga Practice, we have found that staying properly hydrated is a simple necessity of overall health. We provide FREE Alkaline Ionized Water to all students before and after class. We believe alkaline water complements a Breast Cancer Yoga practice. Since introducing alkaline water to our community we have received positive comments about marked improvements in overall stamina, health, and recovery.

ALKALINE IONIZED WATER IS:
  • Microclustered:  After passing through an electric current, the number of water molecules will be reduced from a cluster of 12-15 molecules to 5. It is literally "wetter" water and can be absorbed into our tissues 5x more efficiently. This is an increase of as much as 62% more oxygen reaching our cells!
  • Anti-oxidant:  When carcinogens enter our bodies, free radicals are formed. These scavengers are "hungry" for an electron and they will create imbalance in our bodies by taking an electron from a perfectly healthy cell. It would actually be better if they killed the cell, but instead they mutate it and cause an area of our body, liver, kidney, skin, brain, blood, to become out of balance. Ionized water has been restructured to have an electron available to complete free radicals before they can cause harm.
  • Alkaline:  The minerals that our bodies require for the very basic function of digesting and assimilating our food are readily available in alkaline water because they are electrically charged(electrolytes). There is as much as 40% more calcium in this restructured water. Magnesium, potassium, and sodium are also increased. More people are becoming aware of the importance of having a more alkaline body and the role that your body's pH plays in overall health.

Most of our body is water so it makes sense to put clean pure healthful water in to replace what we expel.
For more information about the many uses of a Alkaline Water System or how to get a machine in your home, please visit www.breastcanceryoga.com

Reduce Stress and Induce Relaxation with Yoga Props

Yoga Pose With Props

For relaxation and stress reduction, a restorative practice is commonly recommended in which props are used in many innovative ways. The props allow the main components of the pose and the subtle adjustments of the body to  encourage relaxation and to assist in improving blood and lymph flow. Using props can open the chest, and expand the breath. This benefits oxygen exchange and rid the lungs of residual stale air volume. The deepened breath brought about by using the right props will physically bring increased lymphatic circulation and drainage. Moreover when props are used to support both the mind and the body they also offer mental and emotional benefits, which help decrease anxiety, fear, and depression.
When emotional fears and anxieties are reduced, the Autonmic Nervous System which consist of the parasympathetic system “rest and digest” functions are made active, down-regulating the habitual responses of the sympathetic nervous system “fright or fear” which floods the body with stress hormones and creates emotional states of panic and fear.

Triggers of Unhealthy Breathing

Influences
There are certain influences on breathing that trigger unhealthy breathing, and pain is just one. The breath will register pain with sudden piercing inhalations and fierce exhalations, and the breath stays affected the entire time that the pain persists or until the pain crisis passes. Emotions also trigger enormous changes in breathing; just by witnessing a scary picture, fear will be triggered. Or the breath can become relaxed and take on a completely different point of reference if we see a beautiful sunrise or sunset. Stress too has an affect on the breath.  The breath is hard wired into your nervous system and if you become tense, hurried or overwhelmed the stress may linger on well past the event.

Conscious Change
Training the breath can help bring these various influences on breathing to conscious place for change. And it makes the breathing a stronger tool to resist the disruption of all these harmful influences: stress, pain, fear and becoming overwhelmed.  A trained breath can also help defuse these powerful and disruptive emotional reactions and keep them at bay. Through practice, the breath can become a powerful instrument in managing stress, restoring energy and calming the mind.

Manage Anxiety
Diaphragmatic breathing “belly breathing” will help manage anxiety when levels of stress are difficult to manage. Pain can be a signal for you, and an opportunity to transform the situational influences in a positive way. These influences need to be managed instead of being a crippling. It is here where developing a daily breathing practice can become the foundation of managing upsets.  I know that anxiety, stress, fear and any other type of tension will appear here and there. However, there is no reason not to have the tools to manage or decrease their effects and provide you with the ability of feeling in control.

Why Do We Take The Breath For Granted?

Breathing Is Automatic
We take the breath for granted; that it is automatic and will always persist, uninterrupted day and night. But precisely because breathing does not require our attention it can be hard to understand “why”.
Yoga And Breathing
Yoga instructs us to learn to breathe with greater awareness.  When the breath is properly trained it becomes an effective therapeutic tool; always present, effective in prevention of emotional stressors and restorative. First the need to consciously learn to regulate and develop a rhythmical breath for a maximum outcome is required. All it takes is the merest voluntary effort and a conscious change in the way we breathe.
Breathing Is A Gift
Breathing normally without conscious awareness occurs outside our mind’s awareness. The breathe is governed by certain cells that measures blood gas levels, which create a crude rhythm of respiration that coordinates the activity of the respiratory muscles. All of which makes breathing smoother and effective.  Just imagine all the inhalations and exhalations passing some 21,600 times in just one day; and that is with out any breaks. Pretty amazing. We ask “Why not take the breath for granted?” This is why not. It is a gift that keeps giving and most of the time we do not acknowledge it.

Breathing for Anxiety

Anxiety Triggers
For many depression sufferers, anxiety can be quite formidable. Anticipation of having breast cancer, potentially having to do chemotherapy or radiation treatments can trigger great anxiety. This anxiety can then disrupt any normal physical or emotional functioning. Besides when anxiety is great enough it can bring on fatigue, sleeplessness, the jitters, irritability and painful headaches.  Not very good for recovery.

Remedy to Reduce Anxiety
Anxious people tend to take short, shallow breaths which create an erratic heartbeat, dizziness and even lightheadedness. Fear may play a hugh role in these physical changes. It is not unusual to treat these symptoms with medication. These medications run the possibility of becoming addictive. Instead of taking something that could become a problem, why not turn to your own breathe as a possible solution to anxiety. One simple remedy to reduce anxiety is to learn how to breathe slowly and deeply. Slow inhales and exhales with your complete attention can be quite amazing.

Why is Breathing so Important in Recovery?

Take A Deep Breath
We hear from time to time this familiar phrase ”take a deep breath” when we become stressed or over excited. Ever wonder why?  There are so many reasons as to why.  Taking a full, deep conscious breath has been known to settle us down when we are  nervous or upset.

Gain Control Of Emotional State
First step is to tune into your breath and become a conscious breather (as much as possible). The immediate result of tuning into your breath is the ability in obtaining control of your emotional state of mind. There is also greater (efficient) oxygen absorption and carbon dioxide elimination.  Now for the a positive potential results of facilitating recovery from surgery and beyond, is the ability to calm your nerves and invite relaxation. The immune system will benefit as well to proper breathing cycles. By conscious breathing we bring the mind/body state into balance and the nervous system runs with maximum efficiently.

Learn & Develop a Breathing Practice
Now how can we facilitate something that may be so challenging, especially when someone  has a  “monkey mind”, a restless mind that jumps all over.  If you can find a yoga teacher that specializes in breathing techniques or maybe a great breathing CD that introduces specific stress relieving breaths this would be most helpful. However, this could be the easy part, the real job would be the commitment to yourself to learn and develop a breathing practice. All I can tell you is that it is so worth it.  Studies support that proper breathing play a large role in recovery by balancing, energizing, and relaxing the mind/body connection.  Try it; it is for everyone.

To often we take life, and our circumstances to seriously and it really doesn’t serve us to do so.  I know for myself when I stop and watch anything funny I focus only on “funny”.
Medical Research on Laughter
Studies at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, March 7, 2005 has one of the most ground breaking results in terms of laughter’s role in the health of the mind and body.  There is a strong connection between blood vessel expansion (vasodilation) through laughter. Improvement to the blood flow after laughter is equal to a 15-30 minute workout. Researchers believe laughing causes the body to release beneficial chemicals called endorphins, or “natural pain killers.” The release of endorphins contribute to a sense of well-being and will counter act the effects of stress hormones, and cause the dilation of the blood vessels. Even anticipating laughter can increase endorphin levels, and help boost the immune system. All which will reduce inflammation in the body.
Laughter for Chemotherapy & Radiation Therapy
When going through chemotherapy or radiation laughing can only help. The best part of laughing is that it puts us in a positive state of mind, and that is exactly what’s needed to bring us through the physical and emotional roller coaster ride of breast cancer. Another key feature of laughter is that it moves lymph fluid around the body at a biophysical level.  Just by “over laughing”; that robust, gut explosive laughter is healing. Our immune system function is stimulated by laughter, it literally clears out old, dead waste and toxins from our organs and muscle tissue. It is important that we understand that our lymph system doesn’t have it’s own pump; we need to move around (and breath deeply) in order to properly circulate lymph. Laughter supports this function.
Important to Stay Positive and Laugh
The more we laugh the happy we will become and through the laughter we will develop a positive attitude towards everything. Even if there are times where we don’t feel it, we need to fake it. It has been shown that even when manipulated to smile people in truth feel happier. Laughter stops depression right in its tracks and boosts our immunity.
Use Laughter as Our Medicine?
We know now is the time to pull out all the stops and help ourselves get better. We need to reduce our levels of chronic stress (our journey with cancer may have just begun), we need to boost our immune system function, protect our nervous system, and my God our sanity. Well, “Laughter is the Best Medicine.”

I cannot say enough about laughing, right down to the fact that the people around us will enjoy our company which will support our well being.  Go check out funny videos; YouTube is full of funny.  Rent funny movies. I guarantee a lot of laughter.
