Laughter As Medicine For Breast Cancer Recovery

By Diana Ross, E-RYT 500

I want to share my feelings on laughter and joy  as part of the healing cycle of cancer recovery, and for that matter, many conditions. Undoubtedly, laughter has  a real beneficial effect on our physical and emotional health. A robust, gut explosive laugh simply feels good. It literally melts stress away.

So why aren’t we laughing more to relieve our stress and improve our health?
It may be a challenge to get out of our own way. So often we take life and our circumstances too seriously, and it doesn’t serve us to do so. Truth be told, some days you might have to fake it when you just don’t feel like laughing, and here’s a good reason to go through the motions: studies show that even when manipulated to smile people actually feel happier. Laughter stops depression in its tracks.

I know for myself when I stop and watch a good sitcom or read a funny email from a friend, I focus only  on this lighter side, and it lifts me. Even studies show the more you laugh the more positive you become; you just feel better about practically everything. Medical research on laughter Studies at the University  of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore (2005)   are among many that show groundbreaking results in terms of laughter’s role in  the health of the mind and body.  There is a strong connection between blood  vessel expansion (vasodilation) through laughter, at least during those seconds and moments when we are laughing and for a little while beyond. Improvements in blood flow have actually  found to be equal to those from a 15-30 minute  workout. Researchers believe laughing causes the body  to release endorphins, or “natural pain killers.” These endorphins contribute to a sense of well being; they counteract the effects of stress hormones, and cause dilation of the blood vessels. Even anticipating laughter can increase endorphin levels.

Laughter and our immune system
Studies show that when we laugh, lymph fluid moves more efficiently through our bodies; an immune system booster and way to eliminate what we do not need. That’s because with better lymph flow we clear out old, dead waste and toxins from our organs and muscle tissue. It’s important to understand that our lymph system doesn’t have it’s own pump; we need to move around (and breath deeply) to properly circulate lymph. Laughter supports this function.

Laughter’s greatest power
We know that now is the time to pull out all the stops and help ourselves get better. Laughter’s ability to help in this arena is perhaps its greatest power. It puts us in a positive state of mind, and that’s just what we need to bring us through the physical and emotional roller coaster ride of cancer. We need to reduce our levels of chronic stress (our journey with cancer may  have just begun).

We need to boost our immune system function; protect our nervous system; and
my God, our sanity. Well, “Laughter is the Best Medicine.”

I cannot say  enough about laughing, right down to the fact that the people around us will enjoy  our company, which will support our well being.  Go check out funny videos; YouTube is full of funny. Rent funny  movies. I guarantee you a good laugh or two.

FIR Infrared - A Soothing and Healing Cancer Treatment

By Diana Ross Co-Founder of Breast Cancer Yoga.
FIR Infrared Therapy is a pretty incredible alternative cancer treatment. I was fortunate enough to buy this FIR Infrared “Rainbow” some time back for aches and pains for me and my family.  Now I use it all the time to generate heat “fever heat.” When cancer cells are heated past 41/43c degrees the blood flow is insufficient for the proper elimination of wastes (namely lactic acid) or proper oxygenation, due to the inability of the capillaries to dilate effectively at this higher temperature. Consequently the cancer cells become oxygen-deprived and lactic acid build ups, the pH of the cell will steadily drop, and the cell will die of its own acidity. Healthy cells have no problem regulating themselves at the same temperature (+ 41 degrees C) so I realized that this is a potential cancer treatment without damaging side effects to healthy cells!

What is Far Infrared therapy (FIR) and what does it do?

FIR Infrared Rays are waves of energy, totally invisible to the naked eye and capable of penetrating deep into the human body. The rays gently elevate the body's surface temperature (107.6F/42 celsius and above; this enables the destruction of cancer cells), and activate major bodily functions.

Another thing that I am doing is applying castor oil treatments (pack) over my chest and organs. I saturate the oil on a piece of flannel fabric. Placing a towel underneath my back (just in case) keeps the area clean from any leaks.

Castor oil works as an antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal agent. When applied topically it treats a variety of skin conditions, reduces pain, and stimulates immune system function. It also acts as a lymphatic stimulant so for me to have lymphatic node tumors - it works. Castor oil has been thoroughly investigated for its industrial use but only a minimal amount of research has been focused on its medicinal benefits. That said, the healing properties of castor oil appears to have survived countless generations of scrutiny. One of the more compelling health benefits is castor oil's support of your immune system. This healing property does not require you ingest ing the oil but only to apply it externally. The benefits of castor oil packs were popularized by the late psychic healer Edgar Cayce.

My friend Lorraine Aguilar from www.yogaflowstudio.com is my model. We spent the day going through all my protocols. It was a lot of fun checking everything out. Lorraine brought a “Heart and Lung” Yoga Video for us to explore so there was a lot of sharing and caring.

Last note I am also doing FIR Infrared Sauna treatments which is far more intense for the whole body but very therapeutic. I will save that for another day. Lots more to share. love and light everyone. Please post comments. I enjoy dialoging.

American Cancer Society, Diana Ross and Breathing For Cancer

Breast Cancer Yoga Event With American Cancer Society

“Breath With Purpose” is a step by step instructional workshop that will teach you how easy it can be to learn how to breathe properly. You will also learn that the quality of the mind is linked directly to the quality of the breath.

Diana Ross, E-RYT500 and Founder of Breast Cancer Yoga introduced the Art of Natural Breathing to create inner calm, release tension and increase mental clarity.

Breathing For Cancer Prevention, Treatment & Recovery
  • Great for centering and feeling grounded.
  • Breathing fully calms anxiety.
  • Strengthen the nervous system.
  • Creates a respiratory balance through rhythmic inspiratory/expiratory cycles.
  • Stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system.
  • Breathing deeply brings forth awareness of an inner witness.
  • The mind begins to quiet so we can hear what is truly being thought.
  • With breathing excess chatter is dissolved.

How Can Women Use Yoga to Prevent Breast Cancer?

and find out about:  WATCH NOW
How does yoga help breast cancer recovery in particular? Yoga does three things, it creates lymph to move throughout the channels, encourages deep breathing, and fosters relaxation. All this helps to decrease cortisol and increases GABA levels so that a feeling of harmony can occur.
How can women use yoga to prevent breast cancer? There are many things women can do to help prevent breast cancer. First is to move your arms to help stimulate lymph flow, become a conscious breather. The breath is instrumental in also moving lymph. Eating right, getting lots of good sleep, drinking good quality water, and surrounding yourself with those that love you all play a part in good heal and cancer prevention.
In your experience how does the holistic approach to treating breast cancer differ from the generic western approach? There are three approaches, alternative, complementary and allopathic. Currently allopathic medicine has been introducing more and more complementary therapies in their bag of wellness tricks, and yoga is one of them. You will see more and more merging together when someone is diagnosis with breast cancer. Studies are supporting the benefits of yoga and recovery.
What is Asana and what is its connection to Breast cancer?
A yoga pose is called an asana.

These questions will be answered by Diana Ross- Experienced-Registered Yoga Teacher, breast cancer survivor and the founder of Breast Cancer Yoga.

Yoga As A Complementary Therapy For Breast Cancer

Diana Ross, E-RYT 500

Yoga Has Stepped Into Center Stage As An Integrated Complementary Therapy

Yoga for balancing the mind, body and spirit.  Integrated yoga therapy includes postures, breathing exercises, meditations, chanting, a healthy lifestyle and most importantly relaxation techniques. There are numerous studies worldwide providing scientific evidence of yoga’s therapeutic potential. It is now known that when the nervous system is balanced, the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems function correctly and the brain works together to create a balance of both action and calmness. The body’s immune system is revitalized to create dynamic responses that maintain health. When the body experiences this balance, the mind also experiences it and a higher knowledge or spirit prevails. Yoga is that vehicle to bring the mind, body and spirit together as one.

Yoga Can Be a Lot Of Fun

Enjoy every deep, slow breath while moving your arms, legs and torso. It is so important to evenly pace the movement with the breath. The breath is key to your wellness. It too balances the mind, body and spirit. It is the cosmic gas station.  “If the mind wanders the breath will follow.” Take it slow, take a big conscious breath, come into the present moment and just Be.

Breast Cancer Yoga Founder & Survivor

Diana Ross, E-RYT 500
Why I Created and Founded Breast Cancer Yoga
Breast cancer has touch my life in so many ways. First my own direct experience with the disease; then my sister, two sister-in-laws and finally my favorite first cousin. Not to mention friends and students. It seemed so natural that after teaching TriYoga for 17 years I would evolved to teaching a more restorative yoga flow like Breast Cancer Yoga.  I felt it was time my practice became more about serving or SEVA.

Lymphedema & Cancer Related Fatigue
There is a real need for a gentle flowing yoga practice to help support women in breast cancer recovery. Not only recovery but lymphedema management and cancer-related fatigue. Two major concerns that are not focused on.  I wanted this yoga to be specific, doable and as healing as possible.

Breast Cancer Yoga is Healing
Breast Cancer Yoga's use of props are paramount to feeling grounded, secure and nurtured.  There is deep focus on moving in and out of the pose while using the breath as a guide to do so and listening to soothing music which add so much value to recovery. I feel satisfied when someone says to me that they feel better, stronger and optimistic.  I want to make a difference in someone’s recovery and this is how I do it.

Breast Cancer Recovery Walking Meditaion

Well there are many of us who just don’t or can’t sit still.  The mind takes over and we struggle with quieting ourselves.  We can’t sit, we need to move around so why not a walking meditation.  The picture I shared of a path in the woods is from my morning meditative walk with my dog, “Happy Riley”.   We both so look forward to this time.  He smiles the entire walk.

To begin YOUR walk you need to be conscious of your footsteps, and your pacing.  You want to breath in feeling the your expand inside you and walk with slow and deliberate steps.  Feel the earth under you feet.  Notice if you feel light or heavy.  Is your chest lifted or is it drooping forward?  Be as comfortable as possible. Now notice everything.  Let you vision expand to every space.  Smell the air.  Is it crisp?  Is there a breeze? Notice everything.  Just be mindful of your surroundings.  Now notice your breath.  Without taking control of your breath, allow it feel natural and satisfying.  Let your arms and hands dangle to your side body or maybe in your pockets.  I personally love pockets.  Feel your inhaling breath come and expand your chest; now let your exhaling breath release thoughts that may take you away from this walking meditation.  Walk if you can for 15/30 minutes.  Then when you reach home see if you can sit comfortably and quietly for 5 minutes.  Set an intention for your day. This could be the start of a great restorative walking meditation.

Maximize Health And Recovery Through The Breath

Maximize Health and Recovery
The diaphragmatic breath is the most calming and therapeutic breath. When constant stress leads to restriction of connective and muscular tissue in the chest area; a decrease in ROM (Range of Motion) is experienced. This decrease is due in part to unconscious shallow breathing. The chest does not expand as much as it would with slower and deeper breaths. Deeper diaphragmatic breathing is efficient because of the greater amounts of oxygen being drawn in the blood which then flows in the lower lobes of the lungs. Breathe Consciously. “It is as simple as oxygen helping to nourish the body, the muscles, and organs which then provides relief from stress, fear and anxiety. Slow, deep, and relaxed breaths calm the autonomic nervous system, producing balanced stable energy.  Conscious breathing does improve the body’s immune function, and lower blood pressure. Make a conscious decision to start with 5 to 10 minutes a day of deep breathing.

FREE Preview "Standing Yoga Poses for Breast Cancer Recovery and Lymphedema Management" E-book

Breast Cancer Yoga has released Standing Yoga Poses E-book as apart of our "Healthy & Hopeful Lifestyle" E-book Series. Free preview of Standing Yoga Poses
Standing Yoga Poses E-book Contains
“Healthy & Hopeful Lifestyle” E-book Series contain specific restorative yoga poses that assist in breast cancer post-surgical recovery, fatigue and lymphedema management. Also included is a standing therapeutic breathing exercise which is an essential tool for reduction of stress, anxiety and depression. Complementary Therapies included in this E-book are herbal teas, massage oils, and aromatherapy to further enhance healing.
Benefits of Standing Yoga Poses
Standing Yoga Poses E-book introduces our first “upright” yoga series. Here the emphasis is placed on developing stamina, flexibility and strength. Balance is a key component in standing. The use of legs and arms builds the whole body. This provides a clearer understanding on how we control our physical and emotional direction by developing this sense of being grounded and being present.
Yoga Helps Overcome Obstacles During Recovery
Remember as you begin to practice yoga poses with awareness, you not only begin to feel better but you will also be able to feel; that is, you become sensitive to everything and everyone around you. As inner awareness expands and deepens both within and outside the body, we consciously begin to overcome obstacles of fear, pain, anxiety. You can practice yoga in such a way that the practice becomes a much “larger yoga.” Our true nature is revealed through this new sensitivity and awareness. We intuitively begin to discover how to overcome certain obstacles on this journey with breast cancer.

Prevent Breast Cancer with Healthy Lifestyle Choices for 2012

Necessary Lifestyle Choices for Optimum Health

An anti-cancer lifestyle will include a variety of exercise, organic foods, clean pure water and air. There are a few easy steps to keep the body safe and healthy. It is important to cultivate an awareness of what feels and taste right going into your body. It is equally important to stop and take notice of bad choices. Ask yourself “Is this good or bad for me? “Will it make me feel better or worse?”  We all want to feel alive and vital.

Exercise – Yoga
Practicing restorative yoga has shown through studies to encourage and improve sleep and to enhance overall quality of life. (Reuters Health) – About one third of breast cancer survivors experience fatigue that affects their quality of life. A new study found that doing yoga might help restore some lost vitality. There are some simple suggestions to start exploring a change in vitality.

Cancer Prevention Foods – Vegetarian/Vegan Diet
It is suggested to eat a plant base diet of fruits and vegetables: make your diet rich in organic fruits and vegetables that are full of micronutrients and bioflavonoids which are duly noted to help prevent breast cancer or other cancers. Here are some simple choices to select from to start improving your health.

Water Therapy – Alkaline Water
Alkaline water (referred to as ionized water) can neutralize or decrease the acidity of the body’s pH caused by stress, modern diet, and air pollution. We suggest trying this water and feeling the possible positive effects.

  • Find a water store and get alkaline water by the gallon (it usually stays charged with negative ions for up to 48 hours)
  • Purchase if possible a home alkaline water system that filters pollutants as well as charging the water with negative ions and anti oxidants
  • Benefit from the many ways to use alkaline water like necessary hydration for the body’s cells

Manage Stress – Learn to Breathe
Deep breathing is vital in that it encourages the release of body toxins, rebuild healthy tissue which consequently increases overall energy. This true oxygen exchange stimulates digestion, assimilation and elimination. A very important function of breathing fully and slowly is that the body’s natural relaxation response is prompted. This relaxation response results in decreased tension, anxiety and fatigue. A great place to start is with our single down-loadable breathing exercises or you could do the following.

Laugh Often – Emotional Balancing
It has been shown that even when manipulated to smile people in truth feel happier and joyful. Laughter can stop depression right in its tracks and boosts our immunity. We suggest the following to bring on happiness.

  • Have a daily joke sent to your e-mail
  • Watch funny YouTube videos
  • Listen to the comedy channel on the radio
  • Download comedians from iTunes
