Laughter As Medicine For Breast Cancer Recovery

By Diana Ross, E-RYT 500

I want to share my feelings on laughter and joy  as part of the healing cycle of cancer recovery, and for that matter, many conditions. Undoubtedly, laughter has  a real beneficial effect on our physical and emotional health. A robust, gut explosive laugh simply feels good. It literally melts stress away.

So why aren’t we laughing more to relieve our stress and improve our health?
It may be a challenge to get out of our own way. So often we take life and our circumstances too seriously, and it doesn’t serve us to do so. Truth be told, some days you might have to fake it when you just don’t feel like laughing, and here’s a good reason to go through the motions: studies show that even when manipulated to smile people actually feel happier. Laughter stops depression in its tracks.

I know for myself when I stop and watch a good sitcom or read a funny email from a friend, I focus only  on this lighter side, and it lifts me. Even studies show the more you laugh the more positive you become; you just feel better about practically everything. Medical research on laughter Studies at the University  of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore (2005)   are among many that show groundbreaking results in terms of laughter’s role in  the health of the mind and body.  There is a strong connection between blood  vessel expansion (vasodilation) through laughter, at least during those seconds and moments when we are laughing and for a little while beyond. Improvements in blood flow have actually  found to be equal to those from a 15-30 minute  workout. Researchers believe laughing causes the body  to release endorphins, or “natural pain killers.” These endorphins contribute to a sense of well being; they counteract the effects of stress hormones, and cause dilation of the blood vessels. Even anticipating laughter can increase endorphin levels.

Laughter and our immune system
Studies show that when we laugh, lymph fluid moves more efficiently through our bodies; an immune system booster and way to eliminate what we do not need. That’s because with better lymph flow we clear out old, dead waste and toxins from our organs and muscle tissue. It’s important to understand that our lymph system doesn’t have it’s own pump; we need to move around (and breath deeply) to properly circulate lymph. Laughter supports this function.

Laughter’s greatest power
We know that now is the time to pull out all the stops and help ourselves get better. Laughter’s ability to help in this arena is perhaps its greatest power. It puts us in a positive state of mind, and that’s just what we need to bring us through the physical and emotional roller coaster ride of cancer. We need to reduce our levels of chronic stress (our journey with cancer may  have just begun).

We need to boost our immune system function; protect our nervous system; and
my God, our sanity. Well, “Laughter is the Best Medicine.”

I cannot say  enough about laughing, right down to the fact that the people around us will enjoy  our company, which will support our well being.  Go check out funny videos; YouTube is full of funny. Rent funny  movies. I guarantee you a good laugh or two.

Air Purifiers For Breast Cancer

Air Purifier For Cancer Prevention And Treatment
By: Diana Ross, Co-Founder of Breast Cancer Yoga.
“Indoor Air Pollution is America’s number one environmental health concern. Fifty percent of all illness is caused by indoor air pollution”. – Environmental Protection Agency. You inhale roughly; 1 liter of air with each breath along with 70,000 particles. Less than one half of one percent of those particles are visible. All of the bad stuff in the air – bacteria, mold, viruses, and pollen -are less than one micron. A smoke particle released in the air at 8 feet will come crashing to the ground 408 days later. That means it’s in your breathing space, along with all of the other pathogens, for months.
If you don’t have an efficient air purification system, you and your family are the air purification system.

Imagine a frying pan of fish cooking on the stove with your ceiling fans running and your air conditioning system circulating the air. Within just a few minutes it is in every nook and cranny of the house. You can’t filter smoke out because the particles are too small. The only way to remove it is to open every door and window in the house and try to vent it. Even after four hours you can still smell the fish smoke.
Vollara Air Purification System From Breast Cancer YogaVollara’s ActivePure technology is recognized as a Certified Space Technology for having effectively applied space-based technology to address the real and growing concern of indoor air pollution for all people on earth. ActivePure’s technology using (RCI) Radiant Catalytic Ionization) that ionization will cause the smoke particles to stick together, get bigger, and fall out of the indoor air 250 times faster. Much like snowflakes float and snowballs crash.
Let’s talk about another technology that’s called oxidation, they are systems sending out invisible plasma of friendly oxidizers. They spread through the house much like the smoke that is coming off that burning frying pan. We take oxygen and water vapor and through the use of a UVX light that activates the honeycomb catalyst we breakdown the oxygen(O2) and water vapor (H2O) that occur naturally in our air to vaporous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and other friendly oxidizers. These oxidizers have a few things in common. They all occur naturally. They are all combinations of oxygen and hydrogen. And they are all very unstable. As these invisible oxidizers go out, they bump into mold, viruses, bacteria and other pollutants. They oxidize those things and they revert back to water vapor and oxygen which is a very natural process. This process actively cleans the air; it cleans the flush handles, the door knobs, the countertops and then literally every surface in the house, 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week.

If I had influenza and I touch the doorknob that virus will stay viable for 48 hours. Using ActivePure technology with RCI, the virus on the doorknob is up against a 99.9% kill rate in the very first hour.
Bad viruses and other pathogens can evolve against certain antibiotic and antiviral medicines, but they cannot evolve against oxidation.

How often can you wash your Mattress? The reality is you really can’t.
In a book by Dr. Alan Somersall a statistic is presented. He writes that three out of four asthmatics die between 2:00 o’clock and 4:00 o’clock in the morning and it’s because of breathing dust mite feces and bacteria that are imbedded in the pillows and bedding. The worst part of most people’s day is first thing in the morning after getting up. Sinuses are stuffy or clogged and eyes have that nasty crust that forms magically in the middle of the night. Not only is this greatly reduced or eliminated after a bed sanitization, but snoring usually stops and a better and longer night’s sleep is the result.

Snowflakes float and snowballs crash. A smoke particle, at .01 microns, takes 408 days to fall a distance of eight feet and is in your breathing space for four to five months! Remember that every time you inhale a breath of indoor air (about one liter) it contains 70,000 particles composed of dead skin, dust, dust mites, dust mite feces, viruses, bacteria, mold spores, pollen, carcinogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs), smoke and particulate. If you don’t have an efficient, active advanced air purification system, you and your family become the air purification system.

A huge point about Vollara technology; and this has to do with Nosocomial Infections (occurring in hospitals), MRSA and so called Super Bugs. One thing I love about this technology is that bad viruses and other pathogens can and do evolve against antibiotics and antiviral medicines (and are doing so at an alarming rate), but they cannot evolve against oxidation any more than they can evolve against fire.

Aromatherapy Diffusers and Essential Oils For Breast Cancer

Aromatherapy AnyWear and Essential Oils by Tabs.

Aromatherapy pendant diffuser necklaces are worn by men and women to feel happier and healthier, especially when conflicted with emotional and physical stress and anxiety.

People with cancer and other ailments benefit greatly from scents that smell good to them. An aromatherapy pedant diffuser necklace worn around the neck with a favorite scent in it can be very cheering.

Just add the scent to the pendant, dab some on the diffuser cork, pop the cork in the pendant and wear the necklace around your neck. Anyone can wear one anywhere. Some people even use them as car diffusers (around the rear view mirror).

Our Story:
My 11 year old daughter Tabetha (Tabs) and I co-founded Aromatherapy AnyWear and Essential Oils by Tabs in January 2014. Our goal was to help people heal and feel happy through aromatherapy.
The idea for the business came from SummerFest, an annual vegan festival held in Johnstown, PA, in July 2013. A vendor gave Tabs a small glass vial to wear on a necklace string and told her to put fairy dust in it. Instead, we put essential oils of ylang ylang and lavender in it and added a cork top to diffuse the oils. We test marketed around Rochester. People really liked the concept so we decided to design our own diffuser necklaces, and started marketing around the US.

We feature our diffusers in retail outlets, spas, through Essential Oil consultants, on Facebook – aromatherapy anywear and essential oils by tabs and on our blogsite - http://aromatherapybytabs.blogspot.com. We sell via retail & wholesale channels.

Tabs has been featured on Rochester’s YNN Cable’s R News – Business Now as a Young Entrepreneur and on WHAM/Fox News’ Morning Show as the Youngest Entrepreneur ever interviewed on the show.

We donate 1/3+ of sales to animal and vegan causes, with additional donations going toward education, cancer, autism, & fundraisers.

My two sisters are cancer survivors. My husband lost both his mom and sister to cancer.
We blog at and show our wares at http://aromatherapybytabs.blogspot.com.

Beth & Tabs of Aromatherapy By TabsAbout Beth Garver Beha: Beth and her 10 year old daughter Tabetha (Tabs) co-founded their business Aromatherapy (and Essential Oils) by Tabs in January 2014 (http://aromatherapybytabs.blogspot.com; facebook-essential oils by tabs). They sell and design aromatherapy pendant necklaces and create custom essential oil products. Beth’s sisters are both cancer survivors: breast and cervical. Beth is vegan, Tabs is vegetarian. Beth and Tabetha both run, swim and cycle. Aromatherapy by Tabs donates a portion of its profits to Relay for Life and animal causes. FIR Infrared - A Soothing and Healing Cancer Treatment

By Diana Ross Co-Founder of Breast Cancer Yoga.
FIR Infrared Therapy is a pretty incredible alternative cancer treatment. I was fortunate enough to buy this FIR Infrared “Rainbow” some time back for aches and pains for me and my family.  Now I use it all the time to generate heat “fever heat.” When cancer cells are heated past 41/43c degrees the blood flow is insufficient for the proper elimination of wastes (namely lactic acid) or proper oxygenation, due to the inability of the capillaries to dilate effectively at this higher temperature. Consequently the cancer cells become oxygen-deprived and lactic acid build ups, the pH of the cell will steadily drop, and the cell will die of its own acidity. Healthy cells have no problem regulating themselves at the same temperature (+ 41 degrees C) so I realized that this is a potential cancer treatment without damaging side effects to healthy cells!

What is Far Infrared therapy (FIR) and what does it do?

FIR Infrared Rays are waves of energy, totally invisible to the naked eye and capable of penetrating deep into the human body. The rays gently elevate the body's surface temperature (107.6F/42 celsius and above; this enables the destruction of cancer cells), and activate major bodily functions.

Another thing that I am doing is applying castor oil treatments (pack) over my chest and organs. I saturate the oil on a piece of flannel fabric. Placing a towel underneath my back (just in case) keeps the area clean from any leaks.

Castor oil works as an antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal agent. When applied topically it treats a variety of skin conditions, reduces pain, and stimulates immune system function. It also acts as a lymphatic stimulant so for me to have lymphatic node tumors - it works. Castor oil has been thoroughly investigated for its industrial use but only a minimal amount of research has been focused on its medicinal benefits. That said, the healing properties of castor oil appears to have survived countless generations of scrutiny. One of the more compelling health benefits is castor oil's support of your immune system. This healing property does not require you ingest ing the oil but only to apply it externally. The benefits of castor oil packs were popularized by the late psychic healer Edgar Cayce.

My friend Lorraine Aguilar from www.yogaflowstudio.com is my model. We spent the day going through all my protocols. It was a lot of fun checking everything out. Lorraine brought a “Heart and Lung” Yoga Video for us to explore so there was a lot of sharing and caring.

Last note I am also doing FIR Infrared Sauna treatments which is far more intense for the whole body but very therapeutic. I will save that for another day. Lots more to share. love and light everyone. Please post comments. I enjoy dialoging.

Arms Over Backbend Yoga Pose

Visit http://www.breastcanceryoga.com to learn more about yoga for breast cancer & lymphedema.

Introducing: Lorraine Aguilar, P.T., ERYT 500 Demonstrating Arms Over backbend. Lorraine is the director/founder of http://www.YogaFlowStudio.com .Lorraine has been a practicing Physical Therapist since 1991 and specializes in yoga therapeutics and orthopedic manual therapy. Lorraine has been practicing yoga since 1992 and teaching since 1995.

We wanted to introduce her style and enthusiasm of teaching this restorative yoga pose which we will call "Arms Over BackBend". This is great pose for those in recovery and for managing or preventing lymphedema.

Arm Over BackBend

BENEFITS
Quickly promotes inner calm
Elevates chest, and deepens breath
Promotes lymphatic drainage of breasts and pectoral muscles
Post surgical benefits of reducing fibrous adhesions and scar tissue

INSTRUCTIONS
1) Begin seated on the earth with your back to a large bolster and legs extended. A yoga  block can be used to support the head when in the full backbend.
2) Place a belt, shoulder distance around the forearms. Lengthen the spine and fold over the bolster. Lift and draws arms over head and feel yourself reaching and lengthening the side body,  and arms. The belt helps with the arms not separating out to side and creates a bit of resistance.
3) Feel your breath nice and full. Let your spine relax into the bolster so to enjoy this unfolding of the spine. If you wish  to go deeper you can remove the block but please do what is most comfortable.
4) When finished, rise up and come into a soft forward bend.

Visit our family operated website http://www.breastcanceryoga.com to learn more.

Exercise For Breast Cancer

Here are a few points regarding exercise during and post-surgery and/or treatment:
  • Strength training will support bone integrity that becomes compromised with chemo and steroids. Discuss this with your physician if lymph nodes are affected in your cancer treatment or lymphodema in the arm is present.
  • A moderate/low intensity cardio program will support a healthy heart, circulation and mood – a mild sweat is a good guideline. Do wipe off the sweat so it does not re-enter the body, after all, the skin is an organ of elimination. (While undergoing radiation treatment, do discuss this with your doctor, as there are restrictions.)
  • Clothing might present some challenges. Make comfortable and organic cotton choices that allow free movement and airflow.
  • Physical therapy, post-therapy exercise will provide ROM (range of motion) as incisions start to heal. You want to avoid restrictions in movement to prevent secondary shoulder, wrist, neck and back problems. The process of regaining full range of motion after surgery does take time.
  • Acupuncture on the scares and adhesions is a good idea as scars can disrupt the nervous system. At the same time it will boost immune function and provide stress reduction. It is necessary to wait for healing of the skin.
Fatigue must be respected – yet a gentle exercise program will actually increase energy and support lymphatic flow.
  • Posture exercises: With the physical, emotional and psychological trauma, it is ‘normal’ to pull inwards in a protective manner esp. after surgery. Awareness and gentle exercises that pay attention to good posture will support the physical body and energetic flow between organs and glands.
  • Social support and laughter are so important. If possible seek out a fun, nurturing and safe environment. Uplifting music does help too!
  • Radiation adversely affects heart and lung health. (I am aware that this is a controversial point.) The bottom line is: Do support your cardiovascular system

Yoga For Breast Cancer - Where To Begin!

Where do you begin?
Not everyone is disciplined enough to do their yoga at home and others thrive with a home routine. There are some easy suggestions on how to start a yoga practice with this understanding of differences. Start slow, make sure you create a practice that can grow as you regain strength and stamina.
  • Find a place at home that is quiet and well ventilated.
  • Set a time each day or every other day that encourages a routine.
  • Find a competent yoga teacher that teaches to the cancer community or a special breast cancer yoga DVD
  • Dress comfortably, there should be no constriction for the breath.
  • Eat a light breakfast at least a hour beforehand.

Don’t be hard on yourself just persevere
It does get easier, and it is important to manage a self care practice. One of the many benefits of yoga therapy is that the practice awakens positive emotions, builds self-confidence and reduces depression. There is an openness of spirit that leads to greater understanding when the practice of yoga is embraced. This all can be achieved but there must be determination and fortitude.

Yoga can be a lot of fun
Enjoy every deep, slow breath while moving your arms, legs and torso. It is so important to evenly pace the movement with the breath. The breath is key to your wellness. It too balances the mind, body and spirit. It is the cosmic gas station.  “If the mind wanders the breath will follow.” Take it slow, take a big conscious breath, come into the present moment and just Be.

Yoga Decreases Stress Hormones For Breast Cancer Patients

Diana Ross, E-RYT 500
Founder of Breast Cancer Yoga

It is well documented that yoga decreases stress hormones, like cortisol and increases GABA (gamma-Aminonbutyric acid) levels. GABA is an important calming chemical produced by the brain that counteracts anxiety and stress.

  • GABA is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter chemical in the brain.
  • GABA is responsible for balancing mood levels. It is believed that certain physical reaction disorders are due to the failure to produce adequate levels of GABA.
  • Through brain imaging it has been shown that a restorative yoga practice increases GABA levels markedly.
  • When GABA levels are maintained with breast cancer patients, physical stamina increases. Daily activities like climbing stairs, walking and doing the laundry become easier compared with those that don’t engage in a yoga practice or exercise.

GABA is very important for sustained recovery and optimal health.
Stress reduces the levels of GABA in our brains. The primary stress hormones, which inhibits GABA levels are cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. Cortisol is a steroid hormone that is manufactured in the adrenal glands and synthesized from cholesterol.  They are small glands alongside to the kidneys. The hormone cortisol is released into the body during stress; hence it is called the "stress hormone." However cortisol is necessary for the overall function of the entire body.  It is when there is an excess of cortisol that there is excess stress so when cortisol is secreted and remains in the bloodstream over prolonged periods of time, one may lose bone mass, or experience increased blood pressure, suppressed thyroid function, and weakened cognitive performance. The consequences of sustained cortisol levels include a compromised immune response as well as increased inflammation in the muscle tissue, hyperglycemia, and increased abdominal fat. The proper balancing of the physical, and then emotional body are key to recovery, and good health. We need both but they need to be in balance, and yoga works directly at balancing them.
